Ben Lammers keeps getting better, and Georgia Tech is enjoying the benefits of his efforts in a surprisingly fun season. "Unless I make every shot and block every shot on defense, I'm not going to be satisfied," he said. "Once the season's over, I'll be working on everything I can. Whether it's low post, high post or defensive movement."
Davon Reed scored 21 points, DJ Vasiljevic added 13 and Miami survived having a depleted roster to beat Georgia Tech 70-61 on Wednesday night. Dewan Huell scored 11 of his 13 points after halftime for the Hurricanes (17-8, 7-6 Atlantic Coast Conference).
Every time Georgia Tech went to the rim for a layup in the first half, the ball just wouldn't go through the net. Coach Josh Pastner told his team to stay calm and keep pushing. "I've been in basketball for something like 25 years and I've never seen anything like it," Pastner said. "I told our guys that it's got to turn our way. We're due to make a layup here or there."
First-year Georgia Tech coach Josh Pastner said he had recruited John Collins "hard" when Pastner was at Memphis. But Collins ended up at Wake Forest instead, and on Saturday, he made Pastner regret that recruiting miss once more.
Clemson's Elijah Thomas knew he hadn't played close to the defense he was capable of and took it upon himself to dig in and improve. The rest of the Tigers seem to have followed along, winning for the second straight time after a demoralizing six-game Atlantic Coast Conference losing streak.
The Yellow Jackets inked 24 new football recruits on Wednesday, making the 2017 national signing day class official. A dozen of the 24 players are homegrown from the state of Georgia, with the rest split between South Carolina, Tennessee, Florida, Louisiana, California, and Hawaii.
Halfway through his first ACC season, Josh Pastner has exceeded expectations at Georgia Tech. It's been a surprising start for the 39-year-old coach. The Yellow Jackets have wins against top 10 teams with victories over North Carolina and Florida State. Last week they upset the Seminoles by a wide margin and took a last-second Top 25 victory over Notre Dame.
Josh Okogie made a fast-break layup as time expired, Tadric Jackson had a career-high 25 points and Georgia Tech earned another surprising victory over a ranked opponent, beating No. 14 Notre Dame 62-60 on Saturday.
Josh Okogie scored 35 points, Ben Lammers added 18 and Georgia Tech pulled its second home upset of a Top 10 opponent with a 78-56 victory over No. 6 Florida State on Wednesday night. Georgia Tech (12-8, 4-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) led 41-15 at halftime and 70-47 with 6:52 remaining on Lammers' dunk. Florida State never got closer than 18 points in the second half.
Marial Shayok scored a career-best 19 points and No. 16 Virginia used a 22-7 run spanning halftime to beat Georgia Tech 62-49 on Saturday. London Perrantes added 11 points, all in the first 7 minutes, for the Cavaliers (15-3, 5-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), and Devon Hall had 10. The victory was the fourth in a row for Virginia.
